One evening, not long after I decided to start ‘Laura M designs’ I applied to exhibit my work at Country Living Magazine’s Christmas Fair in Glasgow on a bit of a whim – I had visited the show every year since I could remember, and it was an event which had signified the beginning of the Festive Season for me for a very long time!
With this in mind, I couldn’t believe it when the organisers replied and said they would be delighted to have me there! And so the prepping began!
In the months leading up to the event, I was a bag of nerves mixed with excitement and fear – I really had no idea what to expect! It was my first Christmas with ‘Laura M Designs’ ,and my first ever craft fair of any sort, so I felt a little overwhelmed by the scale of the event. I prepared optimistically for the show, making enough stock that I guessed would last me through the show, right up until Christmas.
I spent the weeks before preparing stock, day and night, planning how I could jazz up my tiny stall (1m x 1.5m) and trying to ensure I had everything I would possibly need for the 4 days I would be at the SECC.
Before I knew it, set up day was here! We arrived early on a wet and windy November morning with two cars full to the brim of paper cuts, apple crates, step ladders and tins of paint. After locating my allocated space, we quickly got to work decorating the stall. It took us the best part of 5 hours to get everything all set up, but finally I was ready to for the next day!
The weekend got off to a flying start, there were hundreds of customers lining up outside the hall, ready for the doors to open and for their Christmas shopping to begin! The whole event was over in a flash – I somehow managed to sell out of all my stock, and took home a massive bundle of order forms for customers who still wanted some of my items in time for Christmas – I even took orders for half way though the following year! I was speechless and completely on cloud 9. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to go so well.
I met so many incredible people – customers and fellow stall holders over those 4 days, and I will be eternally thankful that I got to take part. I even won the ‘Most Festive Stand’ award which was presented to me on the Friday by the Country Living team, this also meant that I secured my place at the following years show free of charge! What a lovely surprise!
If anyone reading this is a fellow crafter and is thinking about doing the show, my advice would be DO IT! It might just be the best decision you’ll make for your business this year!
